According to the Guardian's ombudsman, the quote, "Let's look at it simply. The most important difference between North Korea and Iraq is that economically, we just had no choice in Iraq. The country swims on a sea of oil," was taken out of context, and misconstrued. [via News24.com]
Nur sehe ich da irgendwie nicht die Miskonstruktion.
Beim Guardian, wo der ursprüngliche Artikel schnellsten vom Netz genommen wurde, liest sich das dann so: A report which was posted on our website on June 4 under the heading "Wolfowitz: Iraq war was about oil" misconstrued remarks made by the US deputy defence secretary, Paul Wolfowitz, making it appear that he had said that oil was the main reason for going to war in Iraq. He did not say that. He said, according to the department of defence website, "The ... difference between North Korea and Iraq is that we had virtually no economic options with Iraq because the country floats on a sea of oil. In the case of North Korea, the country is teetering on the edge of economic collapse and that I believe is a major point of leverage whereas the military picture with North Korea is very different from that with Iraq." The sense was clearly that the US had no economic options by means of which to achieve its objectives, not that the economic value of the oil motivated the war. The report appeared only on the website and has now been removed.Meiner Ansicht nach ist das eine "geringfügige" Umdeutung. Nur läuft es, ob es nun flugs umgedeutet wurde oder nicht, doch irgendwie auf dasselbe hinaus. Man könnte es nun natürlich anders herum drehen wenn man's denn nicht wahr haben will, und behaupten es seien die Medien die lügen. Glaube versetzt Berge.

Es ist vielleicht ein kleiner semantischer Unterschied zwischen dem ersten Bericht und der Gegendarstellung, allerdings bedeutungsmäßig ein recht großer. Der ursprüngliche Bericht sagt aus, dass sie aus wirtschaftlichen Gründen keine andere Wahl hatten, als in den Irak einzumarschieren. Der zweite sagt aus, dass sie im Fall Irak keine ökonomischen Möglichkeiten hatten, Druck auszuüben, während sich die Lage in Nordkorea anders gestaltet. Das liegt daran, dass der Irak auf einem Meer aus Öl schwimmt, und somit ökonomisch wesentlich unabhängiger ist als NK. Ob das so war, angesichts der Sanktionen, sei einmal dahingestellt, aber seine Worte sagen nicht aus, dass es nur wegen dem Öl passierte.
Das heißt natürlich nicht, dass der auf der Seite des US-Verteidigungsministeriums aufgetauchte "wahre" Wortlaut echt ist und keine Lüge. Man kann aber nicht pauschal von einem "Einknicken" des Guardian sprechen. Es kann sein, dass die "Welt" und der "Tagesspiegel", wo es zuerst abgedruckt wurde (noch vor dem Guardian) einen Übersetzungsfehler gemacht haben.
Es ist ziemlich offensichtlich, dass Öl der Hauptgrund der Invasion war, dieser Artikel ist jedoch nur ein schwacher Hinweis darauf (leider).
